Waterton National park

Waterton is around 3 hours drive from Calgary. I would recommend 2 days (1 night stay) to explore this place. From Calgary you can either drive through the highway 22 or through highway 1 . Highway 22 is the scenic drive, so I recommend taking that for one of the drives. Highway 22 goes through the beautiful farm lands and ranches. Waterton has a huge lake that flows into US. the cruises here actually take you to the US waters as well. Waterton also has so many amazing hikes, some can even have trails that lead to US so be aware of the routes while you hike. The forest here are pretty thick and the undergrowth is thick as well. There are more bears here too. Here are a few must see places on a trip to Waterton

Waterton is famous for wild flowers ! They also have a wild flower festival in late June every year. Not every year you will see the same view of wild flowers but its definitely a lot of meadows and hills covered with a huge amount of flowers in different colors.

While in Waterton you will notice many burned tress and its from the 2017 Kenow Wildfire. The forest is growing back pretty well but the burnt trees can be visible for quite a few years.

Stay: Waterton stays are tough to get as well as costly. We usually stay at Pincher creek, a 45 min drive from Waterton

  • Lundbreck falls

You can see Lundbreck falls if you take the highway 22. It is a pretty majestic falls and not to be missed while you drive on this highway

  • Entering waterton – wild flowers and wind mills
  • Redrock Canyon

It is a beautiful spot to walk through the red rocks in the canyon and through the water. its a special kind of hike to walk through the canyon and if you dont have a proper shoe (water shoe, crocks, non slippery), you will get a great feet acupuncture 😀

It can be pretty crowded but the crowd will reduce if you walk a little bit further up the canyon.

  • Blakiston Falls

Its a short walk from red rock canyon to Blakiston Falls. The falls are very pretty. It has 2 viewpoints. The far view point gives the view of the falls and the closer one actually take you to the top of the falls.

Wildlife viewing – Grizzly bear and big horn sheep

  • Horse riding

We went with Waterton river trail rides. There are couple of other trail ride teams as well like the Alpine stables.

This was a very unique experience for us. One guide would come with our group, teach us some basics of horse riding and guide us through a beautiful trail over the mountains, along the river and across the river. Horses may not listen to us always though 😂. Some types it gallops and sometimes walks slow or not on the trail.

We tried 10 mins to get our horses to stand in row but failed !!
